700 expected for clean up, world record Zumba attempt

 

More than 700 youth and adults have volunteered for Global Youth Service Day 2013. The event will be held Saturday rain or shine starting with a Clean Evansville trash pick-up from 9 to 11 a.m.  At  1:30 p.m., an attempt will be made to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest youth Zumba class

Twenty-four Clean Evansville teams will target areas around Garvin Park/Bosse Field, Jacobsville, Downtown, Glenwood Neighborhood and McGary Middle School. Clean Evansville volunteers are advised to dress for the weather.

Downtown Evansville sidewalks are getting a makeover.

The city received two separate contracts totalling $1 million and that money is being used to fix the sidewalks in more than 100 city locations.

Central Library will have a delayed opening on Tuesday, April 16 due to the installation of a replacement compressor on the building’s roof.  The Library will open at 1:00 p.m.

All other EVPL locations will operate as normal.  Customers can also access eBooks and other downloadable material and information online anytime at evpl.org.

Jacobsville residents and stakeholders will gather Saturday, April 13, at 10:00 a.m., at Delaware Elementary School to develop a shared local vision for the Jacobsville neighborhood.

The visioning workshop is facilitated by Jacobsville Join In, the organization working to develop the Jacobsville Quality of Life Plan funded by the City of Evansville.  The Indiana Association for Community Economic Development (IACED) in association with Jim Capraro, Senior Fellow for the Institute for Comprehensive Community Development will lead the workshop on Saturday.

Rescue Mission begins shelter operations and first evening meal services at new residence center

Fresh off yesterday’s successful dedication ceremony and open house for the new Residence Center at 500 East Walnut Street, the Evansville Rescue Mission will be opening its doors today to the individuals it daily serves—the Tri-State’s homeless and less fortunate—on day two of what Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has declared “Evansville Rescue Mission Week”.

With the assistance of Christian Fellowship Church, homeless guests who have resided in the Mission’s former shelter address, 300 S.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will begin making the half-mile move to their new temporary home today.

Library to celebrate 100th birthday with party, cupcake decorating contest

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library is celebrating a big milestone, and the community is invited to help commemorate this important occasion.  The EVPL is 100-years-old this year, and they'll be kicking off a year-long Centennial celebration with a birthday party on Sunday, February 10 from 2:00-4:00 pm at Central Library.

Enjoy an afternoon of live music from After Hours, memories of the Library, and recognition of those who have helped the EVPL evolve over the past century.

All eight Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library locations will be closed Monday, January 21 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
