Goodbye Casino Aztar, Hello Tropicana Evansville

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- The casino in Downtown Evansville officially switched to its new branding overnight on Tuesday. 

That means there will be a lot of things going on this weekend and through the rest of the month to celebrate. 

Casino guests can register to win free prizes. They'll be given out several times an hour from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5:00 Sunday night.

That's going on through the end of June. This weekend they'll have cake and some showgirls will be around. 

St. Mary's, Mayor Winnecke team up for Healthy Recipe Contest

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and St. Mary's Health are partnering to launch a "We Are Evansville" Healthy Recipe Contest just in time for the start of St. Mary's Market Days, which will take place during "We Are Evansville Month."

Hearing set for EPD officer accused of battery against student

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- An Evansville police officer could soon learn his fate.

The Police Merit Commission met on Monday because of the investigation that was launched after an officer was accused of battery against a student while working off-duty at an EVSC school. 

No decision was made at Monday's meeting because that officer has filed an appeal. Police say the officer involved is Cpl. Mike Winters, who is a 30-year veteran of the force.

Consultant accused of not working expected at Monday's city council meeting

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- Some Evansville City Council members are expected to make comments about a consultant they hired who is now accused of not doing the job he was hired to do, yet still collecting a monthly paycheck.

A special sculpture representing Evansville is in place and now on display.

Mayor finds several over-payments to vendors on Ford Center project

The mayor has announced the findings of a state-conducted financial audit of the Ford Center construction project and the review found several over-payments to vendors over the life of the project.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke made that announcement in his office Friday afternoon. He says they suspected some discrepancies about a year ago, and that was when he instructed the city controlled to ask the Indiana State Board of Accounts to conduct the audit.

Evansville man accused of being drunk when throwing gun in Ohio River

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- An Evansville man was arrested after throwing a gun into the Ohio River.

EPD is questioning 43-year-old Robert C. Williams
after police say he threw a loaded gun into the Ohio River.

Officers found Williams intoxicated in the lower portion of Dress Plaza just
after midnight on Friday.

The Plaza is closed after 11:00pm.

As officers tried to identify him, Williams pulled a .357 revolver from under
his leg and threw it into the river.

Officers handcuffed Williams and then
recovered the gun from the river.
