Detective: Filth & feces found in home with five kids

Two Evansville parents are jailed on five counts of child neglect.

According to a case report, EPD got word that Valerie Harrelson and Christopher Stark's children were living in unclean conditions.

Police went to the Adams Avenue home where Harrelson and Stark were living so they could investigate.

According to police, there was a strong, foul odor coming from the porch area of the home.  The detective also stated in the report, "there were an abundance of flies flying around the front door."

Mayoral candidates each say they will appoint new Police Chief

Both mayoral candidates say it's time for a change in police leadership.

Wednesday night before members of the Fraternal Order of Police, candidates Rick Davis and Lloyd Winnecke say if elected this fall, they'll select a new Chief of Police.

14 News talked with both candidates Thursday, and they say they think Chief Brad Hill is doing a great job.  They're just ready for a change.

While some community members agree, others will be sad to see him go.

Hoosier smokers: Quit for 30 days, win $2,500

A statewide contest is underway to give Hoosiers an extra push to stop smoking. Quit for a month, and you could win $2,500.

There are already a lot of incentives to quit smoking like the cost of a pack of cigarettes, and of course, the health concerns. Now, Indiana is adding one more, the possibility of prizes.

Prizes include $1,000 for third place, $1,500 for second, and a grand prize of $2,500, all for quitting during October.

United Way raises awareness about poverty

The United Way's hosting an event to raise awareness about poverty. It's called poverty simulation and it's designed to show what real poverty stricken families deal with on a daily basis.

The event involves people from the community acting out scenarios they never hoped they would have to face...poverty.

Emily Baxter with the United Way says the goal's to make ends meet.

Evansville Habitat receives award in affordable urban housing

The Habitat for Humanity of Evansville has received a Lt. Governor's Award for Excellence in Affordable Urban Housing. The award was given by the Indiana Association for Community Economic Development

The award was given for Habitat's Operation Home Again initiative to build homes for families affected by the tornado that hit Evansville in November 2005.

Evansville man's arrested on child molestation charges

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's office says 19-year-old Dillon Wayne Clem admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a girl he knew to be less than 14 years old.

The victim told deputies this happened last month.

The sheriff's office expects additional charges to be filed in this case because authorities believe there are more victims.
