Evansville hires consultant to double check the city's bookkeeping | News
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)-
Evansville City Council has hired consultant David Garrett to double check the city's bookkeeping.
He has more than 30 years of accounting experience.
Every year, the City of Evansville is audited by the state. Last year, it didn't go so well.
City officials say transactions weren't set up properly and money was going into the wrong accounts.
"In the report itself, they chastised us for not having the oversight," said City Council Member John Friend.
Friend believes by hiring David Garrett, problems might be identified sooner, including one mistake where two Ford Center checks were not discovered in the wrong account for months.
"I'm not saying there was any hanky-panky. I'm just saying it was just one of those errors that can occur time to time. What upsets me is the length of time it look to discover it," Friend said.
City officials say most of the problems in the past were caused by software upgrade issues which have since been fixed. A new city controller is now charge.
Some council members were not in favor of hiring the added accountant.
"At this point in time, it's unneeded. This is why we have a city controller and his wonderful staff," City Council Member Jonathan Weaver said.
But, the council voted six to two in favor of hiring Garrett. Friend says mistakes cost time and taxpayers money.
"Mr. Garrett will assist myself and others council members, not to assume there is going to be errors, but just to make sure we have those items that the state board of accounts requires us to do," Friend said.
Garrett started his job on Tuesday. He is on a $20,000 contract for one year.
