Students attend Education Day with Icemen
News

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- About eighty school buses from several area school corporations lined the streets near Evansville's Ford Center today, where students got a lesson of a different kind.

The students got to see the Evansville Icemen game Wednesday at the Ford Center.

Teachers and EVSC officials say they like to incorporate real world experiences into lesson plans whenever possible.

"These core experiences. They kind of tie everything all back together,"  said Matt Jaques of Delaware Elementary School.  "That's what we are trying to do with some of the activities, that after the game, we will go back and do in our math classes and reading blocks. And just try to tie it all back together and give them that big picture. Hopefully, they will have some a-ha moments."

"Usually , we stay in school and do our assignment," said student Dejuan Simms.

Teachers say many of the students have never seen a live hockey game or even been to the new Ford Center.

"I've seen the puck flying everywhere and everybody chasing after one person,"said Dejuan. "It's something my family has never done before."

"Certainly my kids have never experienced it, just because we didn't have hockey here in Evansville," said Jaques. "So, with it being brand new, it was exciting. The Ford Center being brand new, we thought it would be a great thing to do."

In a future trip, students will attend a performance of the Evansville Philharmonic as part of the 'core experience.'
