EPD: Driver speeds away from checkpoint, striking officer | News
A 51-year-old Evansville man was arrested late Friday night after police say he refused to stop at a sobriety checkpoint, struck an officer with his vehicle and drove to a nearby tavern.
Police say they were conducting the checkpoint at East Franklin Street and North Heidelbach Avenue between 11:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m.
They say Jeffrey Dean Bunch was signaled to enter the checkpoint by an officer and a deputy who were directing traffic in the street but instead sped away, grazing an officer in the process with his vehicle.
Police say Bunch headed east on East Franklin with deputies in pursuit. Bunch then drove to the Sidetrack Tavern where he was arrested in the parking lot.
He’s been charged with Class D Felony Resisting Law Enforcement, Felony OWI, OMVWI Test Refusal and Criminal Recklessness as well as driving on a suspended license.
He remains in the Vanderburgh County Detention Center.
