Food, entertainment, art, balloon glow and more at 'Evening on the River'

The 10th annual Vectren Evening on the River event will take place on Friday, May 31, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the downtown riverfront. The event includes local restaurants including Kanpai, Biaggi’s, Just Rennie’s, Kirby’s, J Gumbo, Commonwealth Kitchen and others.

AIDS candlelight memorial set for Sunday night

The 30th annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial will be held Sunday, May 19th in downtown Evansville.

The memorial service begins at 6 p.m. at St. Mary's Church located at 613 Cherry St.

There will be special performances by Gina Moore, St. Mary's Choir, Karen Seal, and Whitney Nelson. The guest speaker will be nationall recognized Wayne Smith.

Ivy Tech graduation set for Friday night at Ford Center

 

Ivy Tech Community College - Southwest will hold its 50th Anniversary 2013 Commencement Ceremony tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Ford Center in downtown Evansville. The event is free and open to the public, no tickets are required. The College will recognize a record number of graduates, over 1,000, up 20% from last year. The College will also award more than 1,300 degrees this year, a 24% increase from last year.

Statewide, Ivy Tech Community College will celebrate the largest graduating class in its history as an estimated 16,700 credentials will be awarded.  This year’s credentials represent an increase of 1,200 as compared to last year. Over the last four years, Ivy Tech’s total number of credentials awarded has increased by 67 percent.

The Vanderburgh County Solid Waste District will hold an Electronics Recycling Day on Saturday, May 11 at the Civic Center parking lot from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

 Residents from Vanderburgh County households can bring a variety of electronic items including computers and computer related equipment, TVs, VCRs, and DVD players.  Microwaves, copiers and appliances will not be accepted.

The Vanderburgh County Farm Bureau's Farmers Market is this Friday from 8 AM to 1 PM and each Friday through September 27. 

A new addition this year is the serving of breakfast and lunch.   

The Art Council has joined the Market featuring a different artist each week.  This Friday early crops are available, such as lettuce, asparagus, cauliflower and  Chinese cabbage.

Walk to create awareness for congenital heart defects

 

This Saturday, May 11, join Mended Little Hearts of Evansville and area families at the Little Hearts Hold Big Hopes Walk to raise awareness of congenital heart defects.  The event will take place at the Casino Aztar Pavilion at 9:00 am.  Registration and pre-ordered t-shirt pick up begins at 8:00 am.  Participation in the event is free.

The one-mile walk will start at the Casino Aztar Pavilion and continue along Evansville’s riverfront.  Refreshments will be available for all walkers.  Bounce houses, clowns, and other family fun will take place after the walk until noon.
