Hunger walk set for Saturday

The 40th annual Vanderburgh County CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk will take place on Saturday, November 3.  It will begin and end at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 1900 N. Fulton Ave. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. The walk will begin at 10 a.m.

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local volunteers to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world. The Vanderburgh County CROP Walk is the longest continuous CROP Walk in Indiana.

Walk to end Alzheimer's set for Saturday

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Evansville residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  The walk will take place on October 20 at Old National Bank in downtown Evansville. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10.

While some members are raising funds and awareness, others are taking an extra step. Team captain and Evansville resident Lynne Baggett lost her mom to Alzheimer’s and has participated in the walk for four years, but this year she will be doing it with purple hair!  Purple is the color theme for Alzheimer's walks that take place across the country.

How to receive Christmas assistance from the Salvation Army

Families and residents from Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties who will be unable to provide their immediate family a Christmas dinner and toys for their children may sign up for The Salvation Army’s Christmas Assistance in person.

Applications Will Be Taken At The Salvation Army, 1040 North Fulton Avenue from October 22, 2012—November 2 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Evening applications will be taken only on October 25 and November 1 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Rotoract will help renovate Ark Crisis Child Car Center playground

Rotaract Club of Evansville, sponsored by Rotary International, will partner with Ark Crisis Child Care Center to renovate Ark’s current playground at at 415 Lincoln Avenue into a natural play space.

The playground renovation at Ark will be Rotaract’s first Signature Project in Evansville. “As a group of young professionals, we wanted to give back to the community in a way that would last for years,” said Jessica Sickman, Signature Project Chairperson.

The newly renovated space will include an outdoor classroom, tricycle path, green space, music area, garden and other natural elements.

New green space honors Ed Ziemer

Keep Evansville Beautiful held a ribbon cutting today for the Ed Ziemer Celebration Garden at 10th and Vine Streets in downtown Evansville. The garden was made possible by a $5,000 grant from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation and Keep America Beautiful Community Improvement grant plus $5,000 raised through private donations.

You voted; Brinker's passes out cash to non-profits

This past August, Brinker’s Jewelers in Evansville celebrated 40 years in business by hosting a promotion to award $40,000 to twelve local nonprofit groups. The public was invited to visit the Brinker’s Jewelers Facebook page anytime throughout the month to vote for one of twelve area charitable groups. On Thursday evening,  during a party at Brinker’s Evansville location, the winners were revealed, with the Vanderburgh Humane Society receiving top honors and a check for $10,000.

Mayor will honor youngsters who kept Tepe Park litter free

Mayor Winnecke will attend the Tepe Park Neighborhood Association’s “Litter Quitters Thank You Picnic” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Tepe Park Club House, 1212 S. Governor St. The picnic is in appreciation of neighborhood youth who have worked this summer picking-up litter at Tepe Park.

A kickball game will follow the picnic using new bases and balls provided by the Evansville Parks and Recreation Department.
