Help Oklahoma tornado victims in Evansville

Evansville Garage Doors, Inc. will be collecting and shipping relief items to Moore, OK. The staff at Evansville Garage Doors is working with a fellow CHI Overhead Doors distributor, Jeneyco Overhead Door, to deliver items to families displaced by the destruction brought by a May 20 tornado.

United Way of Southwestern Indiana’s Spring Into Caring Food Drive is underway this week with local businesses, churches and other groups participating. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to conduct a food drive or donate to meet our community’s need for food.

Friday, May 10 is collection day.  Donations may be dropped off at one of the following collection sites between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Walk to create awareness for congenital heart defects

 

This Saturday, May 11, join Mended Little Hearts of Evansville and area families at the Little Hearts Hold Big Hopes Walk to raise awareness of congenital heart defects.  The event will take place at the Casino Aztar Pavilion at 9:00 am.  Registration and pre-ordered t-shirt pick up begins at 8:00 am.  Participation in the event is free.

The one-mile walk will start at the Casino Aztar Pavilion and continue along Evansville’s riverfront.  Refreshments will be available for all walkers.  Bounce houses, clowns, and other family fun will take place after the walk until noon.

Put non-perishable food by your mailbox for NALC drive this Saturday

 

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 21st annual food drive to combat hunger on Saturday, May 11. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes in Evansville and the surrounding area.

700 expected for clean up, world record Zumba attempt

 

More than 700 youth and adults have volunteered for Global Youth Service Day 2013. The event will be held Saturday rain or shine starting with a Clean Evansville trash pick-up from 9 to 11 a.m.  At  1:30 p.m., an attempt will be made to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest youth Zumba class

Twenty-four Clean Evansville teams will target areas around Garvin Park/Bosse Field, Jacobsville, Downtown, Glenwood Neighborhood and McGary Middle School. Clean Evansville volunteers are advised to dress for the weather.

Traveling City Hall visits Potter’s Wheel

 

The public will have a chance to learn more about the Evansville Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD) and see the new “Choose not to Lose” high school crime prevention jeeps on display at the at the Traveling City Hall meeting Wednesday, April 24, at the Potter’s Wheel, 333 Jefferson Ave., from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will open the session with a welcome and introduction of city department heads and elected city and county officials. Metropolitan Development Dir. Philip Hooper will give a short PowerPoint presentation explaining how DMD works with unique resources to spur growth and development in the heart of the city. Police Chief Billy Bolin will be available to share information about the new “Choose Not to Lose” campaign launched this month involving at all local high schools. The main goal of the campaign is to encourage kids to make positive choices.

Local seniors get comfy surprise

Voices, an advocacy group for more than 1,500 Vanderburgh County seniors, is finding new ways to serve the community.

For the first time, they hosted a pajama drive. The community was asked to donate pajamas or even shampoo and other personal grooming items. To some of the seniors they serve, these simple things aren't always provided free and must otherwise be purchased.
