Damn Yankees coming to Aiken Theater

The Broadway smash Damn Yankees will play the Aiken Theatre at The Centre for one performance only on Wednesday March 21 at 7:30 p.m.

"Six months out of every year, when we cook for them it never pays; Instead of praising our goulash, they're appraising the plays of Willie Mays!"  So sings the wife of a1950’s baseball fanatic who trades his soul to the Devil for a chance to lead his favorite team in the pennant race against The New York Yankees.

EFD St. Pat's Day will include Irish step dance team

The Evansville Firefighters Pipe and Drum Corps is hosting its 6th annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Saturday, March 10 at Germania Maennerchor.   The evening includes a memorial dedication, steak dinner, and  bi-level entertainment.  DJ Randy Weber will provide dance music upstairs, and the acoustic sounds of Chuck Grady will be heard downstairs.  Local fiddler Steve Mayo will provide dinner entertainment. 

 New to this years festivities is Celtic Fire, sponsored by Ri Ra Irish Pub.   Celtic Fire is an Irish Step Dance Performance Team from City Center Dance in Snellville, Georgia, and is under the direction of sisters Jessamy & Mercedes Bleth, both of whom are three-time World qualifying Irish dancers and former regional, national, and international competitors.  In 2011, members of Celtic Fire were the featured performers at the Yellow Daisy Festival in Stone Mountain, Georgia; Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri; the Carolina Opry in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Queen Latifah, Harry Belafonte coming to Evansville this year

An Oscar-nominated actress and the man who brought Calypso to America will headline the 2012 Evansville Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series.

In a news conference today, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke announced that Queen Latifah and Harry Belafonte will be the featured speakers for the 2012 series. Latifah, a musician, actress, music label president, author, and entrepreneur, will speak at The Centre at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 12. Belafonte will follow on Thursday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m.

Both events will be free and open to the public. No tickets are needed for admission.

Museum’s annual wine tasting event, EMC Uncorked, gets better with age

Save the date of Saturday, February 25 for the 2012 Evansville Museum Contemporaries’ annual EMC UNCORKED. Participants will be able to sample dozens of wonderful wines provided by a variety of local and national vendors. From red to white, sweet to dry, and everything in-between, there are wines that are sure to suit everyone’s taste. Standard reservations are $35 in advance or $40 at the door.

On Sunday, February 19, bring the whole family to the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library’s annual Mardi Gras celebration for King Cake and live music.  Special musical guests Dennis Stroughmatt et L’Esprit Créole will perform vibrant French Creole music. 

The celebration begins at 2:00 pm in Central Library’s Browning Events Room and is open to all ages and free of charge.

Museum to host champagne brunch with John Dowell

In conjunction with the current exhibition  CITY LIGHTS: THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF JOHN DOWELL, the Evansville Museum will host a Champagne Brunch and Gallery Talk featuring John Dowell on Sunday, February 19 at 12:30 p.m.

Philadelphia native and Professor of Printmaking at the prestigious Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Dowell captures the pulse of various American cities in his large-scale color photographs. Dowell has worked as an artist for over four decades. A master printmaker whose prints, paintings and photographs have been featured in 49 one person exhibitions, he is represented in the permanent collections of 70 museum and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Boston Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, France.

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library has scheduled a number of programs to celebrate Evansville’s Bicentennial.  Events are open to all ages of the public.

River City: A Community Art Project
Now through February 14, share what you love about Evansville.  Contributions will be featured in artwork with Evansville as the theme.  Written submissions accepted at all EVPL locations.  Or, work on a project that will be added to the artwork at our guided participation events at Central Library:
